Sheriff Reacts To New Immigration Law

Civil rights activists are calling on President Barack Obama to fight a tough new Arizona law targeting illegal immigrants that Gov. Jan Brewer signed on Friday. Sheriff Joe Arpaio said, "What's going to happen now is you'll see the president and Congress finally take some action. If it took this for them to be alert and take some action, then it's worthwhile, isn't it?"

He had to go through rigorious paperwork and pay to become a US Citizen along with his mother whom is now a permanent resident. If they had to why can't you? If the illegal immigrants can cross our borders so easily well so can the terrorists. What would you say if your child's life or someone you hold near and dear to your heart was put in jeapardy by someone whom crossed our borders illegally. A U.S. Citizen is required to have proper paperwork when in Mexico, Cuba, Europe and Canada so why can't we enforce the US Laws of not allowing people to stay in our country illegally. I think the next law should be that if you are wanting to live, work, and be a part of the US then you must learn the US language which is English. Did we ever vote or sign a law into Arizona or any state requiring all paperwork, signs, telephone services, and out right customer service be provided in English and Spanish. NO NOT TO MY KNOWLEDGE!! Discrimination well think about it if we do provide everything in English and Spanish, well are we discriminating against the German, Chinese, Japanese, etc...

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! This is the United States and we the people of the United States speak ENGLISH and elect to learn, speak, and read other languages.

When I was younger I was told that responsible citizens should take it upon them to be well-informed.

Not a single person who claims to support Sheriff Joe Arpaio has so much as posted a single bit of factual data about his effectiveness at reducing crime, or helping to improve the problem with illegal immigration (the only issue he seems to care about).

The amount of property crime as well as violent crime has declined also. It appears that indeed a disproportionately high percentage of crime is committed by illegal immigrants (I don't remember that figure)- it's not a gigantic dis-proportionality, but significant.

Now can we get back to talking about the Sheriff's job performance?

Now, back to the subject of this blog: Joe Arpaio (Man, it's odd how his supporters would rather discuss anything or anyone than his law enforcement record!)

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said on Monday that he won't make an announcement about any plans he may have to run for governor over the weekend because Vice President Joe Biden will be in Phoenix on Saturday and he "wouldn't want to take the press away" from the VP. (See how he doesn't mind the press when they're giving him free publicity?)

This morning, Arpaio appeared on KTAR's morning show and told John Hook that he plans to make his announcement on Monday.

When was the last time he considered running for Governor? Was it four years ago? He's a politician. And that's the news.

His job is to protect legal citizens, those who are here with legal passportes, etc. It is time to stop illegals from getting food stamps, welfare, health care and making the expense great for our state. Through the grapevine it is said illegals have come here to get back their country which was stolen from them in the past. In my neighborhood almost every block has a drug dealer saying I sell drugs to support my family, I am not allowed to work. I was taught as a child that when a police officer asked me my name I was to give him that information. Those who are in leadership positions, with the government, churchs, etc., need to stop, think and take a look at what they are doing. They are not protecting the rights of legals, but hindering and making it more difficult for us to live a comfortable life here in this state, by protecting the illegals. If someone is here legally, what harm is it to show their I.D.? The president of Mexico states that this will make problems between U.S. (Arizona) and Mexico. Why does he not get his country together and that way the Mexicans can live decent lives in their own country and come and visit us with passportes just as we legals are required to get passportes to travel into other countries. From what I see is that there is no respect for the law. In many churches there are illegal pastors taking in tithes and offerings and not reporting the monies to government. A true pastor should not involve himself/herself in government issues (unless it is for prayer) as Scripture says to give to Ceasar what is Ceasar's and give to God what is God's. The illegals think that Arizona will crumble without them, that we will die of hunger, guess again illegal, we are a strong people under one God. When the going gets tough the tough get going. A profectic word for all. This state will set the example for other states and this will become a federal issue and this will become a federal law as we need to protect our state and country from people who come here only to get the resources but not to love the country. For those of us who are here legally we will be ready to step out at the right time and support Arpaio and others who are in positions to protect us from crime. NO! to put that in a far better perspective, I'm afraid that I may be going nuts!! You see, I am obsessed with Joe Arpaio and Andy Thomas. I spend every minute of every hour, researching, researching, researching!! newspaper articles, Internet blogs, chat rooms, forums, court cases, I constantly talk to people, ask people if they know or have heard anything, anything!! at all that I may be able to use against Arpaio and Thomas.

I am so obsessed with this righteous work, that I quit my job and applied for welfare so that I could devote more time to my work. It has even reached the point that I had to kick my wife out of the house, because of her incessant nagging about my devoting all of my time to this ever important work. I have come to the point where I can't eat, I cant sleep, I must do more research, I know there is more dirt out there, I just know it.

I have posted all!!! of my findings of my research in this!!! blog, for you, my Internet audience. I have posted unlimited amounts of information and web site addresses where I have found this information, but still I fear there are those of you who are not reading my post, or making use of my information, or visiting the ungodly amounts of web addresses I have posted. My greatest fear of all? that the Joe supporters are winning, and that is driving me NUTSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Sad that none of Arpaio's supporters have had the integrity to mention any of his supposed accomplishments, nor include any data by which his performance as Sheriff can be objectively measured.

Instead some of his supporters need to lie about who they are (and who I am, smearing me in the process). That's how much faith they have in their leader, Joe Arpaio!

This blog is not intended to be about me, or you- it is about Joe Arpaio and putatively, the job he's doing, or not doing for the people of this county. Now, is there any one of his supporters who is grownup enough to either post/cite some objective data about his law enforcement performance; or simply be honest enough to admit that he has done and is doing a rather poor job as the Sheriff? It seems not.

This is not the first time that someone has lied about their identity, posing as someone who questions the credibility of Joe Arpaio and his claims, including that of being tough. If they are, as they seem to be, following the example of that one whom they admire- it's time for a change in leadership at MCSO.

Here is a partial list of police organizations who have expressed no confidence in Mr. Arpaio: State of Arizona Fraternal Order of Police, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge Five, Maricopa County Deputies Association, Arizona Cops.

It appears that asking his supporters to be grownups, or even honest is asking too much. And if they are, as I believe, following Joe Arpaio's example in that- you can plainly see why these police organizations in Arizona, and many of the citizens of Maricopa County (in fact, most), feel that it's time for him to go.

It's the only issue that he, they, and the news media seem to be interested in as it relates to Arpaio. Yet his supporters don't post a word from an objective report, not a single statistic. Why not? Becuase the data makes Joe Arpaio look incompetent. Simms admitted it, when I pointed out that I do a lot of research. Nobody has ever refuted any of it with evidence. Just anger and hatred, like their Master.

Unlike Phoenix PD, and Temp PD, and many other agencies where you can just go to their website and see their crime statistics as an aid to evaluating their performance, this is what you get from MCSO:
"This is not an automated request system. After submitting your request it will be reviewed and processed manually by MCSO personnel. Depending on the volume of requests, you will receive a response via email within two to ten business days. Average delivery time is two to five business days."

If his record can't withstand the scrutiny, why not consider replacing him?

ORANGE – One might think Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio would be crowing Friday over Arizona enacting a state law ordering police to screen for illegal immigrants in the field.

After all Arpaio has been doing it for years - with or without official permission.

But the self-proclaimed "America's toughest sheriff" was nonchalant about the whole thing during a live radio broadcast of the "John and Ken Show" at a hotel in Orange.

"It's a political deal," Arpaio shrugged, despite the dozens of adoring fans that clogged the conference room and flowed out into the courtyard.

Still, Arpaio said, it is a good time for him to consider running for governor in the Republican primary in August. He will come to a decision in a week, he said, as the crowd cheered and howled pro-Joe slogans.

He's online today chatting with people. Amazing that he finds the time to put his badge on long enough to get in front of the TV cameras.

He's a politician, not a Sheriff.

You have succeeded in fooling many of those served by you into thinking you and MCSO are protecting them, while well over 70% of your cases are exceptionally cleared- in many cases no investigation is ever done. That's so you can divert crucial resources to your phony "crime sweeps" where you net people here illegally at a rate much lower than most of the other law enforcement agencies who don't make a big publicity deal of their everyday activities. They just quietly carry out their duties. Meanwhile those who have perpetrated violent crimes are never sought because the cases they created are "exceptionally cleared". So the public is at risk for future crimes.

You have brought numerous lawsuits against individuals, and I cannot think of one that you have won. Don Stapely has been through that process twice, facing over a hundred counts each time. You have even prosecuted a presiding judge, who is now suing you- and lost. You maintain that they are still guilty- that means that your agency is pathetic at conducting investigations.

I can go on- but these people who keep posting baseless (that means having no basis in fact) propaganda that echo's your own PR propaganda are either uninformed or are being paid to make a politician appear to be competent.

Let me paraphrase something I said about you earlier: You (Joe Arpaio] are considering running for Gov. again. You always back out in the final hour after milking all of the political airtime you can. BUT- I think that people have a responsibility to be well-informed. I try to be. I try to share what I find with others, so they too can do some research and find out for themselves what the situation really is (or are). I don't want or expect anyone to take my word for anything. But I back up my statements with facts, and typically cite the sources of those, so anyone who's interested can look them up for themselves.

It is very disturbing to me that Arpaio's cheerleading disciples posting here: a) try to change the subject AWAY from Arpaio whom this blog is about (look at the top of each page, his name is in ALL CAPS) ; and b) post political spin and opinion, and name calling and profanity as a means of getting people who might read this to ignore the evidence and make resultant poorly informed (ignorant) decisions regard Joe Arpaio's effectiveness. Some even resort to "identity theft" posting as those they are not, in what can only be described as an effort to dupe people. If the Sheriff can't be defended honestly, with factual information, and honest argument- why is he given the responsibility of running an agency to enforce the law?

I really don't care if someone calls being informed left, right, radical, or anything else. I was taught by my parents that it is a civic duty. And we often hear about the need for a free press for reasons I mentioned earlier.

Look- I want the laws to be very well enforced, while respecting all people. I don't consider that wrong, or left-wing or even political in any way.

So let's see some informational facts about Arpaio's job performance as Sheriff.

Police allowed CBS 5 News to observe as they set up an undercover operation three weeks ago at 19th Avenue and Northern Avenue -- a location not traditionally known as a prostitution hot spot.

The vice squad used female detectives as decoys. It took only minutes for men to drive up and inquire about a “date.”

Officers standing by swooped in to arrest the alleged "johns" and tow their cars.

“I think that's a true indication of how many people are shopping for sex in the Valley when I can put one of my female decoys out on the street and literally within one to two minutes she's been propositioned,” said Sgt. Clay Sutherlin, of the Phoenix police vice squad.

Sutherlin said traditionally, the Valley’s heavily-trafficked prostitution areas were East Van Buren and West Van Buren Streets.

Over the past few years, the prostitution hot spots have expanded to West McDowell Road between 27th and 51st Avenues, along 27th Avenue from Northern Avenue to McDowell Road, and along 19th Avenue from McDowell to Bell Roads, said vice detectives.

One of the newest areas police are seeing problems is on Bell Road, from 23rd Avenue to 7th Street, according to vice detectives.

Investigators insisted prostitution isn't a victimless crime. Prostitutes are often forced into the trade, physically beaten, and mentally abused. There are also the unsuspecting families.

"I feel sorry for the families at home who don't realize what the husbands are out doing," said Sutherlin.

Police said their policy for anyone arrested for solicitation is to impound the person’s car for 30 days.

Do any of you Joe cheerleaders see Arpaios name mentioned here? no! and I will tell you why. The reason you don't see Arpaios name mentioned here is because, our (sic) sheriff is not interested in investigating real criminal activity such as this and enforcing all of the laws.

Arpaios only interest, is in illegal immigration and going after the poor drug smugglers, kidnappers, rapists and drop houses of human traffickers (etc.) This is a typical Arpaio tactic, to leave real law enforcement activity, such as arresting the ( Johns ) of police women, to local law enforcement. We need a sheriff who will enforce all of the laws.

Arpaio is a politician. He's considering for a fourth time running for Governor. The stats on his job performance are very poor. However you can find that information, you don't have to just accept it as fact as when Joe's supporters say that something speaks for itself. When they say it, they never provide any evidence that anyone can prove. Let's see data, statistics. The ones I've found are reliable and indicate that Joe is a very poor Sheriff but a capable politician.

Sheriff Joe didn't invent tent cities, (AZDOC) has been using them for decades. Look it up. You'll never hear it from Joe Arpaio- he loves to let people believe things about him that make him look better than he is. Arpaio, you see, is a politician. That explains the litany of political propaganda, and the dearth of facts from his supporters. I wonder if any of them really even know what the figures show as to his effectiveness as Sheriff.

Of course, his devotees won't refute any of these facts- they will just call me names and try to dupe people by posting as me, using pretzel logic and outright lying. He must be one super Sheriff- er politician!

Arpaio's churlish goon squad loves to tell the informed people that they are blinded, uninformed, etc. But they themselves never disclose the sources of their super-superior information- but that's okay- they don't post anything but propaganda, cheerleading, slogans, etc. Then they go to name-calling, slander, ID theft, and other misrepresentations and outright lies. Wow- the confidence they have in the Sheriff and his "crime sweeps" and all the other PR activities, is just underwhelming. No, I don't know Joe Arpaio. I know quite a bit about his record as Sheriff though. This is not personal, it's about the job he's supposed to be doing, Mark. By all measures- he is doing a very LOUSY job as Sheriff. But he gets in front of the cameras at every opportunity- even leaving the state to give speeches and interviews. Sounds more like a politician than a dedicated law enforcement official to me (and many others).

So now I invite you to post some provable data, that can be verified, to explain your faith in this man. There is none. Sorry. Now let's move on. Maybe he'll run for governor, after milking all the publicity he can from considering it for the fourth time. He's a politician, Mark. A politician of the worst stripe. You know- it takes time and effort to raise that much. Many candidates never get close to that number, especially before they announce. What Sheriff duties did he neglect to find time to raise those monies? What motive did some of his contributors have? And, most importantly, does not this prove that he operates as a politician, since he is one?

You know this is the fourth time he's considered a gubernatorial run? Does that tell you anything about his political motivations?

1) Come up with some incendiary rhetoric when something happens you don't like, or that tends to bring your incompetence or malfeasance into the spotlight
2) Get on "the air" (or the blogs) and let it rip- see what sticks.

Instead of throwing rocks at others, do you think he will EVER promote his record (such as crime statistics, response times, clearance rates, etc.) as Sheriff? Not if he has a brain. His record stinks. Politicially he's better off throwing rocks at others, seeing if he can hurt them; than he is facing his own dismal record as Sheriff.

Many point out the number of votes he's gotten. And that's true. It's a political argument. And it underscores the fact that he's a much better politician than he is a Sheriff.

AZ GOP exec. dir. Brett Mecum tells Hotline OnCall that it is his understanding that Arpaio will not run.

With Arpaio out of the race, Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has a lead, but the majority of GOP voters remain undecided, according to a new survey.

The Rocky Mountain Poll, conducted April 12-25 by the Behavior Research Center, surveyed 319 GOP primary voters for a margin of error of +/- 5.5%. Brewer was tested against Treas. Dean Martin, NRA board member/firearms training center owner Owen "Buz" Mills and ex-state GOP Chair John Munger.

A total of 51% of voters remain undecided. Brewer, who took office after DHS Sec. Janet Napolitano quit to head to DC, is little-known around the state, but many believe her decision to sign a controversial immigration law 2 weeks ago bolstered her popularity among GOP voters.

That Arpaio will not run is of little surprise. The 77-year old 5-term Maricopa Co. sheriff has flirted with GOV bids before, only to drop out at the last minute. Instead, he has spent this year advocating for ex-Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R), who is running a strong challenge to Sen. John McCain (R) in the Aug. 24 primary.

So Arpaio IS a politician. This is the fourth time he will have pulled this maneuver (if the story of him pulling out again is true). We'll know soon.

But here are a few verifiable facts that prove that Arpaio's rhetoric and self-promotion trump his concern for the people who depend on him for law enforcement:

Unlike Phoenix PD, and Temp PD, and many other agencies where you can just go to their website and see their crime statistics as an aid to evaluating their performance, this is what you get from MCSO:
"This is not an automated request system. After submitting your request it will be reviewed and processed manually by MCSO personnel. Depending on the volume of requests, you will receive a response via email within two to ten business days. Average delivery time is two to five business days."

Another measure of law enforcement is response times to 911 calls. MCSO has a response-time goal of five minutes. In 2007, its median response time was just over seven minutes and its average response time was nearly 11 minutes. (from Interview with Glen Gardner, Phoenix Police Department, October 20, 2008.)

By contrast, the Phoenix Police Department reports an average response time of four minutes.2 The Tribune found that in 2006 and 2007, MCSO patrol cars took more than five minutes to arrive on two-thirds of the most serious calls for police assistance. (Pulitzer-winning East Valley Tribune “Reasonable Doubt: Key Findings.”)

Now, those are facts- I dare anyone to prove otherwise. I have made this challenge before, and all I get in response is name-calling and political rhetoric (and worse). If his record can't withstand the scrutiny, why not consider replacing him?

Everyone keeps stating illegals are breaking the law, yes they are. No one complained back in the 70's when AZ ranchers were busing in the illegals to maintain & harvest their crops. So Arizona should be boycotted because its people would like to keep it safe? Somebody please explain the logic of that for me. It doesn't take a bullet from a drug runner's gun to make those of us down here near the border understand that this is drug-related violence -- and Rob's death proves it.
It also doesn't take much more reading to see that the drug dealers are a huge problem with far-reaching capabilities. On April 27, 2010, a large drug bust took place here in Cochise County. Among those arrested was Angelica Marie Borquez , the secretary for the Drug Enforcement Division of the Cochise County Attorney office. Allegedly, Ms. Borquez was tipping off the drug runners to counter drug operations conducted by the county. She was so bold that she used the phone in the County Attorney's office to make some of her calls.
This isn't a blatant effort by drug cartels to obtain control here in America?
Many have already called Arizona residents racists. They are concerned that police will profile Hispanics and disproportionally harass them. But we understand something others in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco don't seem to remember -- we border Mexico. The fact is that most illegal immigrants coming across the border here are, well, Mexicans. Those of us down here facing the danger every day really don't care what some Hollywood actor has to say about the issue. Nor do we care about what the Colombian government or the Latino music community thinks of it. We just want to stay safe.
This is not about race; it's about facts. Use a few of these facts the next time somebody wants to engage you in discussion about the border. Tell him you learned these things from somebody who can see Mexico from his front porch.
