Mid-Week Roundup
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's week keeps getting busier and busier.

It started Saturday with the Huffington Post's summary of the supervisors' indictments.

Then, after a successful deadbeat parent round-up, Arpaio made national news Sunday when the Los Angeles Times wrote about his apparently escalating tactics in the fight against the Board of Supervisors. Also over the weekend, deputies visited the homes of several mid- and low-level county government and court employees. The searches continued Tuesday, according to the Phoenix New Times, when deputies visited the homes of multiple judicial assistants.

On Monday, MCSO triumphantly declared that it will once again be piping holiday tunes throughout the jails, despite lawsuits filed. Four of the six suits (which apparently allege that listening to the harmonies of Alvin and the Chipmunks, Bing Cosby and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, according to past years' playlists, can be considered cruel and unusual punishment) have been dismissed; the Sheriff's Office says it's confident the other two will also be dismissed.

Also on Monday, ABC's Nightline aired its story on Arpaio, saying the sheriff is "unapologetic" about his actions.

Tuesday saw the filing of motions to dismiss charges relating to the court tower project. The attorneys who filed the motion, Thomas Irvine and Edward Novak, are named in Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas' racketeering lawsuit; Irvine and Novak say Arpaio and Thomas lacked the standing to file the suit in the first place.

On the same day, Mary Rose Wilcox's attorney spoke on her behalf at a news conference, essentially saying charges have been filed against her after she followed Thomas' own advice. Deputies asked the attorney, Colin Campbell, to speak with them about the court tower project hours afterward, giving him a deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Wednesday's editions of The Arizona Republic and The Washington Times feature editorials asking why nobody will stand up to Arpaio and lambasting the DOJ for its investigation into civil rights violations, respectively.

Please, oh please. Will there ever be an end to Sheriff Joe's egotistical antics. How intelligent, common sense people can continue to support him is beyond comprehension. Perhaps it is one of the symptoms of Valley Fever.

When judgment comes, what goes around comes around. Alvin & the Chipmunks for eternity. Sound good Joe?

Sheriff Joe is the greatest thing that ever happened to Arizona. Making prisoners do anything that they do not like is punishment, and believe it or not, that is what prison is for. If you do not like Sheriff Joe, you are a worthless waste of human flesh, and probably one of the many idiots who voted for our socialist dictator.

Sheriff Joe is the worst thing that ever happened to Arizona. Making prisoners do inhumane things that they do not like is unproductive, and believe it or not, prison should be for rehabilitaion, not creating worse monsters and anal rapists. If you like Sheriff Joe, you are a worthless waste of human flesh, and probably one of the many idiots who voted for Palin.

It is really sad what Arizona has become, the state of all the rejects that no other state would elect. First of all of you, think you know it all Arpaio lovers that vote for him, don't seem to understand that in his tent city are minor criminals, not serious crime offenders. Second the pink underwear and cuffs are a very large expense we the tax payers are paying, not to metion the numerous lawsuits that have been awarded and the many still pending that will be awarded. Quite frankly, I am sick and tired of working hard to pay for his mistakes. At least the individuals in his jail are paying for their own crimes, and like them, Arpaio needs to pay for his own crimes not us. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME, the Feds will indict him and Andrew Thomas. Also, I am sick and tired of listening to the soar looser John McCain. I mean if it isn't so obvious that he is still angry because he lost, and then to top that to an African American man, who is younger than he is. Personally, I am fed up with all of the idiotic Republicans running the state of Arizona, it is time for a change and I do believe it is coming, soon! Also the rest of you Arpaio lovers should learn to proof read your writing so that it makes sense

Everything I have learned about hating law enforcement and cops I learned due to the MCSO and sheriff Joe. Thanks to them I learned that I really don't like cops. Thanks to them I learned that many cops are corrupt and are not always working on the fair treatment of the public or minorities. Thanks to the MCSO I learned that some cops can't be trusted. Thanks MCSO, Thanks Joe.

It is sad to say that I must post anonymously due to the ongoing retaliatory tactics of our county sheriff. I did not vote for him, because I am close enough to see first hand what goes on in the courts and in the jails. I suspect that his supporters would change their minds if they saw what you really happening.

I recently moved to Arizona ad am amazed at the way things are run here. I read about Joe in the news in another state and simply wondered what was the point for all the show antics he puts on? Ego? How many people out there are deterred from crime because they might have to wear pink underwear or listen to Christmas music? Nothing worthwhile anyway. Prison is to rehabilitate so that the individual can return to society, not to have someone grow to hate the institution. It breeds anger, resentment, and MORE crime. Doesn't "Joe" have more important things to figure out such as how to build and uphold a respectable organization that is supposed to be a servent to the people instead of figuring out how to anger the people?

Those who support Arpaio and his tactics, have evidently been reading too much of his taxpayer-funded PR material. They never EVER cite a quantitative fact. Yes, law enforcement exists to enforce the laws. So shouldn't that be the primary measure of an agency's effectiveness? What about clearance rates for homicides and other very serious crimes? That's a good measure of their investigative prowess- no?

Those who disagree with any questioning of the Sheriff, often resort to ad-hominem attacks against those who want effective law enforcement that they pay for with their taxes. They choose not to look for facts supporting their position. This might be understandable in light of the Agency's own tactics for dealing with facts and statistics that might be used to measure their effectiveness as a law enforcement agency.

Here's an excerpt from a recent report from the conservative Goldwater Institute: <>

Joe's supporters might not like the facts- but if they would simply inform themselves, which is not very difficult- maybe they would be better able to choose a position that is supported by facts. Then they would have no need to make personal attacks on the values or motives of those who question the Sherrif about the performance of the job we are paying him to do. Is it not allowed to evaluate your employee according to his performance? If he happens to be bigger than you are, and carries a gun to work, does that give him immunity from scrutiny or the right to intimidate his employer? How about if we just stick to the facts and have a grownup discussion?

Few of those who question his job performance have expressed any desire to allow or excuse any illegal activity, immigration included. Yet, the supporters of the County's highest uniformed law enforcement officer will often, if not almost always, accuse those who question any of their tactics or their statistics or job performance of having an ethnic bias that supports illegal immigration. In politics, that is known as a red herring. Lets just stick to the facts- okay?

The Goldwater Institute's report excerpt was clipped. Here's that text:

Police departments are supposed to report crime statistics to the FBI each year.
MCSO provided no data in 2005. However, between 2004 and 2007, crimes
reported by MCSO soared. Reported violent crimes grew by over 69 percent,
including a 166 percent increase in homicides over the three-year period.

I especially want to say "Thank You" to Sheriff Arpaio for helping the most helpless of all, the abandoned and abused animals.

Keep up all of your good work Sheriff Arpaio! You are respected by many Arizonians and Americans country-wide.

doing !

so, you all can go on with your rhetoric...
but Sheriff JOE is OUR sheriff....and, if you
DON"T like it....leave...and go (back) to
Mexico !

the VOTERS have spoken....with Joe in office...
and companies not being allowed to hire
illegals, Arizona voters have SPOKEN and
said 'ENOUGH'..

those illegals who come here for
FREE medical treatment, education, food, and
pay NO taxes are now heading to Canada
or back to Mexico (where they belong) !

and for the rest of you idiots who voted
for OBAMA, what have you got to say NOW?

you're all like the Germans who put Hitler
in power, because the economy was so bad,
and they thought HE was the Messiah (too)...
well, look what HE turned out to be..
Obama, who never ran a thing and now runs
the most powerful country in the world...
and whose popularity is in the tank...
YOUR money went to bailout the auto companies..
and where has that got YOU as in individual,
or family. How has THAT affected you
and your budget ?

You DEMS need to re-think your party's
policies and how it affects YOU, rather
than how it affects others (from the big
auto companies to the illegals who are
getting everything FREE).....all compliments
of the Democratic party who want to give it
to everybody (but YOU).

Congratulations....you've screwed yourselves !

And if this govt-run health plan goes through,
you'll be lucky to see a doctor when you
need one...PLUS your money will be paying

All in thanks to the 'ONE' you voted for !

the One who gave your money to bailout
everyone .....but YOU !

do !

this IS the Wild Wild West, where Mexican
cartels are KILLING people for one reason
and one reason ONLY.....to BE THE cartel
that sells and makes millions of dollars
in selling drugs to American children
and adults ....that DESTROY their lives
FOREVER!

And, some of you, want to see Sheriff Joe
go away? I think NOT !

And, btw, congrats to the TEMPE PD for their
big bust of a Mexican cartel recently.

We ALL should be thankful for the men and
women who protect us....and shame on you,

Those who praise Arpaio know nothing about the US constitution or the law. Apraio is supposed to be upholding the law, AT EVERY LEVEL. We should expect no less from a public official, in fact we should expect MORE. There should be no place for abuse of power in public office. This should never be tolerated in the country. If this type of behavior is tolerated then America will become as corrupt as say Mexico. How Ironic that Sheriff Joe acts as corrupt as some of the Mexican law enforcement officials.

Mexican cartel HERE ?

Wake up and stop sounding off about what
JOE isn't doing and make sure you realize
what he IS doing here to protect YOU and
your family !

Illegals are getting away with murder AND
your tax dollars - when are you going to
get angry with that?

How about Obama? when are you going to
get angry that he gave away millions of
your tax dollars and yet, MORE people
LOST THEIR JOBS ! Unemployement went UP,
while his popularity went DOWN !

As a snowbird, I don't have a stake in the debate about Sheriff Joe. My initial response to the war between the Sheriff and the rest of government was amusement. Now I feel sorry for the people of Maricopa County who don't need the turmoil. I understand why the voters have reelected the sheriff because he panders to their fears and discontent. However, I think it is time for change and this mess to be put behind the county.

Arpaio is not a professional law enforcement officer but simply a politician who is good at generating headlines and getting re-elected by playing upon people's fears. He has cost taxpayers tens of millions in lawsuits and higher insurance premiums for the county. Diverting resources to harassing law abiding people; witch hunts to attack public officials who are the only check on his actions/powers etc. means he is not doing the professional law enforcement job he is paid to do. If we had a real law enforcement professional running the department we would most likely have lower crime and lower costs. Some day the voters will hopefully wake up and fire the guy and hire a real law enforcement professional to run the department instead of someone who is only good at sound bites for the mob and media.

Having worked for the current sheriff and 6 other sheriff's in Maricopa County for over 25 years, I see how he has disgraced the position. of sheriff. His duties are outlined by law and he is to provide law enforcement duties in the unincorperated areas of the county, serve civil process, maintain the jails. He has short changed the citizens living in those areas by his activities inside the city limits. I know most people find those raids interesting, however it is not his job and the money and equipment used to do those raids come out of the budget so it cuts into the activities in the areas he is to enforce the laws.
I find it difficult to understand why so many people support his methods. His cost in law suits to tax payers, his handling of employees, as well as the public should be of interest to most people. He has very little support in the law enforcement community. Pink underwear Joe's idea, NO, the laundry manager's inventory was being deplented as inmates were being release with Jail clothing. She suggested this change as a way to identify jail property. It was approved and she recieved Money from the County for the money saving suggestion. No one ever hears that.

First I would say, WHAT PART OF THE WORD ILLEGAL DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND.
Then I would say: It all starts with the
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS we have let our country
move too.
Sheriff Joe is doing just what he is supposed to do. IN FORCE OUR LAWS. And those who say
prison is for REHABILITATION, NO Prison is for
PUNNISMENT. Pay for the Crime you have commitated against the LAW ABIDING CITIZENS of
your community. Then, when you get out, we can start the rehab part of the program. The
reason we are where are today is the DO GOODER'S I call them... These are the people in this country that feel they have to do something for me. Whe they do, it cost's me
more money from my pocket, and I loose another
one of my Rights. We have let these people take over our entire lives, and you can read it
in the other postings here.
I say we need More Joe's in our legal system.
Our country would be better for it. Our crime
system would have less and our prisons would have less offenders in it.
Go Joe.

I am concerned about KPHO's editorializing in Arpiao's case. What part of illegal don't you understand if we make laws and do not enforce them it's worse than not having a law at all. Your constant ha ranging of the Sheriff is not good for law enforcement in general. I have several friends of Mexican decent, friends in Mexico but if you are here illegally you have no rights.
Personally I am sure all elected officials are subject to the same transgressions of ordinary people and can stand a little scrutiny. As for profiling if it walks like a duck quacks like a duck it must be a duck.

Way to go JOE

No we don't need any workers from Mexico. The number of Americans without jobs is higher than the number of Americans without jobs during the last great depression. Why would we want legal immigrants from Mexico when we don't have enough jobs for the Americans citizens in this country?

Other than the third world workers from Mexico, the only ones who want the modern day slaves to come here is the rich who don't want to pay a fare wage. No American can compete with the wages these immigrants are willing to work for. Why? Because most Americans don't have twenty of their friends and distant family members living in one three bed room house, that's why. STOP all immigrant workers legal or not, is what Washington should be doing. But until the majority takes control of our rich controlled government, we will have legal and allowed illegal immigration. If Washington allows immigration to continue here, when there is not enough work here for Americans, maybe then the majority will realize who really runs this country.

This is America and the American’s country, not Mexico’s or the Mexicans that come here expecting free food, medical care and housing. No, they have no rights or nothing coming.

TO ALL OF MEXICO’S MAJORITY
Stay home and fix your corrupt government. WE DON’T WANT OR NEED YOU!!!!
