Protesters Clash With Police At Arpaio March

Ten thousand immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

The protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn't handle immigration enforcement, and Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally, protesters said.

Officers used pepper spray as protesters hurled water bottles at police.

For his part, Arpaio said he wasn't bothered by protesters and that they should be directing their frustrations at Congress because it has the power to change America's immigration laws. "They are zeroing in on the wrong guy," Arpaio said. "They ought to be zeroing in on the president."

For your information, Mr. Gasser: It is estimated that about one of every four people in this country has been a victim of child sexual abuse. It is not something to joke about. It leaves life-long emotional scars. And, no- I am not a victim. I have been in several situations that required me to offer emotional assistance to them though. If you think it's funny or clever, you are in worse shape than any readers heretofore might have thought based on your posts.

I am not really too concerned with what you think of me as a person. I am more concerned with exposing the thinking of those who support Joe Arpaio and his methods. You represent them quite well, it sickens me to say.

One of his lines, when talking about illegals is "our children are pregnant." Yes he is Mexican and yes he knows this, all to well know fact about the illegals that come here. I asked an illegal why they are willing to sleep with minor children, I will tell you what he said. He said in Mexico it is no problem having sex with a minor. Mexico starts at a much younger age with there with families than we do here now a days. This is not a third world country anymore and we stopped calling women at the age of 18 old maids in the 1800. He said when they come here, the Mexican women here are more Americanized and they are very religious as well. They will not sleep with the Mexican men here before they are married or at least until they are of age. Mexicans here legally, obey our laws and our ways. The laws of society in Mexico however, are far different than ours. This illegal said to me, only American women will sleep with them when they are minors, the Mexican women here will not.

Aw I know, you can‘t find these facts of life in your goldwater report or any other report put out by the system like the goldwater report is. Still, that doesn‘t make it not a very real fact of life. You can claim it isn’t so all you want, but why don’t you tell the father of an illegally conceived grandson or granddaughter that, you may get your eyes poked out.

I am not political, and don't think any political party or any politician can solve man's problems. History proves this. If you are a shining example of the white race (most of whom would disavow you and your views)- I think most white people would prefer any other color. Thankfully, you're not. You're just a guy, no doubt a very lonely and unhappy guy, looking to blame strangers for your problems. I have quite a few friends of pretty much every race on earth. There are tall and short, smart and not-so-smart, people of each race.

What perplexes me (one of many things), is that racist people will own various breeds of dogs, and not think one is better than another. They will even let their black lab lick their face (in many cases). But when it comes to human beings of another color, they think that they are inferior, unless they need an organ transplant to stay alive. Than all of a sudden race doesn't matter (organ donor race, that is).

It's like two neighbors who buy totally identical Mercedes, except for the color. One is white and the other black. Each thinks his looks best, that is why they chose those colors. And that's fine- we all do the same when it comes to cars and iPods, etc. The cars have the same equipment and, being the same model, all the parts are interchangeable. The one with the white paint job insists that his car is faster, and more comfortable, and just overall better. Test results don't bear this out, and the dealer even says the cars are the same except for the paint. What do you think of the guy with the white-painted car who insists it is better and more reliable, based solely on the color of the paint?

J.W. Simms- I am not sure why you are so proud of being white. It has nothing to do with any choice you've made, and is thus not a reflection upon you, your qualities, your abilities, or your character. What does reflect on your character is your choice to put others down simply because you happened to be born with a light colored paint job. You seem to think that this should give you some rights to which others are not entitled. What rights have you actually personally earned?

Hopefully you will think about this and make some decisions that will make your life and the lives of others regardless of color richer. This has happened in rare cases, and I hope that you will be one of them.

It's a cynical political calculation- but it has been used effectively by many despots through history, even a few in the US.

However, the public- as evidenced here is tiring of his green baloney that he foists upon them as effective law enforcement.

But notwithstanding that- a much larger problem looming before him is that he will be facing criminal indictment for well-documented offenses. He has already lost a great number of civil cases, costing the taxpayers over $50M. But this latest legal imbroglio will end his reign once and for all. It will be interesting to see more true stories come out of the woodwork during and after that process. Fortunately for him, once convicted- he will be treated with more dignity than that with which he treats others.

"Exceptional clearance" refers to criminal complaints that are dropped, or essentially relegated to the round file without investigation. Sometimes this happens because investigating a criminal complaint would compromise an ongoing investigation by another agency. Phoenix PD, for example, reports a rate of 0.89%, whereas the exceptional clearance rate for MCSO is over 80%! This is very troubling for victims and families of violent crime victims who will never be brought to justice for their crimes. Those families will never get full closure. Worse is the aspect that criminals are allowed to walk free to victimize other citizens.

Sheriff Arpaio talks often about being tough on crime and on criminals. The numbers don't back that up. Here, for example (and there are sadly many more) are some excerpts from the East Valley Tribune:

Key findings of the Tribune’s project
TRIBUNE

• Deputies are failing to meet the county’s standard for response times on life-threatening emergencies. In 2006 and 2007, patrol cars arrived late two-thirds of the time on more than 6,000 of the most serious calls for service.

• MCSO’s arrest rate has plunged the past two years even as the number of criminal investigations has soared.

• The sheriff’s “saturation” patrols and “crime suppression/anti-illegal immigration” sweeps in Hispanic neighborhoods are done without any evidence of criminal activity, violating federal regulations intended to prevent racial profiling.

• Rampant overtime spending on immigration operations drove the agency into financial crisis and forced it to close facilities across the county. Although MCSO officials have said state and federal grants covered all the expense, illegal immigration arrests actually are costing county taxpayers millions of dollars.

• Despite the money and manpower expended, the sheriff’s office has arrested only low-level participants in human smuggling rings: drop house guards, drivers and the immigrants they ferry.

• Deputies regularly make traffic stops based only on their suspicion that illegal immigrants are inside vehicles. They figure out probable cause after deciding whom to pull over.

These facts have been researched carefully.... Nobody wants a Sheriff who talks about reducing crime but acts in a way that, at best fails to do so, and at worst gives criminals the feeling that they can get away with their crimes. Would that Sheriff Arpaio's performance were in line with his statements. Nobody (other than his political competitors) would be going after him in that case. Nevertheless, a closer look reveals a solid majority of Arizona voters still approve of the way the sheriff operates while 59% say Arpaio's doing a fair or good job in office.
His approval rating is down from a high of 77% in the same poll three years ago.
In a statement to 3TV the sheriff blamed the press for his slip in popularity. He says, “Dozens of negative stories were published and aired during the time this poll was taken. No one could possibly escape such criticism unscathed."
The sheriff also adds that, “Though some media will be giddy with glee to report today's poll, the fact remains: I have tremendous support from the citizens."

Anonymous said...: In 1970 I had to go through the legal system to apply for and then be awarded the opportunity to become a U.S. citizen. Times were differnet back then, but the laws were the same. These days, illegal aliens feel they have the right to enter the US anyway they please and to live off our system, because they "are owed what was rightfully their's to begin with!"
Sheriff Joe is correct in enforcing ALL laws petaining to his jurisdiction. He stepped on a few toes of those with nothing but a political agenda, so be it!! Keep up the great work, Joe. If you don't do the job you're doing now, just take a close look at Cd. Juarez, Mexico, because that will be the life in the mean streets of Phoenix, Arizona!!
