Crime Sweep Continues Friday
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says it has made 55 arrests so far in its 14th crime sweep since 2008. Of those arrested, 31 are suspected illegal immigrants.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his crime-suppression sweeps are paid for by state funds and donations; however, he refused to elaborate on how much each sweep costs.

"he refused to elaborate on how much each sweep costs..." That's putting it charitably. I saw the broadcast of the reporter asking him that question. He was either utterly ignorant of the answer or wants to fool the public about how much they are paying for this latest publicity stunt of his. What state funds and what donations? He didn't say.

If it weren't sad, it would be funny. He's still under investigation for abuse of power, and no stunts he can pull will change that.

While Sheriff Joe has all seniors and newbys to the valley thinking that he controls the crime, he doesn't. After 31 years in the valley I can tell you all he has on his side is GREAT P.R. people. The crime/criminals are as bad if not worse than they ever were. You put 3000 men together and take away their cigarettes, coffee, good food and see how long it takes to start a fight.

Do we ask how much every government action costs? Why does the media single how law and order for an accounting. Phoneix paid $14 million in bonuses is anyone upset about that in these hard times. With all the investigations and given the media hunt, if there were a hint of something wrong it would have leaked a long time ago. The country government is so corrupt the special investigator of Thomas had to step down. Good job of vetting Supreme Court. We know about Shady Mary but how far does the corruption go?

I don't have any problem with Joe arresting illegals unless he is violating a citizen's civil rights in the process of trying to do so.

Anonymous, why are you talking about the Candy Andy side show on a board about Arpaio's "crime suppression sweeps"?

Whomever wrote: "Why does the media single how law and order for an accounting. Phoneix paid $14 million in bonuses is anyone upset about that in these hard times." How do you know that? Because of the media!!! So you contradicted your own point.

Also- this blog is about Arpaio and his "sweeps". So do you think it might be appropriate to discuss that? Most do. He doesn't even know how much they cost. So he doesn't know if he's spending funds where they will have the most impact to protect the citizens. Clue!!!!

Some just want to change the subject (as always) to the problem of illegal immigration. Joe is making some impact, but mostly it's publicity for him to get people's minds off the investigations of his abuses. He hasn't done a good job overall as Sheriff. He wants to mislead you into thinking he is, but the facts are available if you care to look.

The problem I have with Arpaio's sweeps is that he has to make it a week long media event. His is the only LE agency that feels they deserve a marquee and a spotlight for going to work and doing their jobs.

I really wish the media would just stop showing up for this press conferences and stop putting him on TV. Video what he says so that we have record of his blunders (like "it's this civil rights stuff- all the crap") but don't put him on the nightly news announcing that he will conduct a sweep sometime in the next 30 days. That's not news. That's just Joke needing his ego stroked.

In a related story, it looks like the judge is recommending Arpaio settle in the (expensive) civil rights violation case that has caused the big ruckus over the emails. We'll probably be able to comment on this one later tonight or tomorrow, so here's your preview:

Anonymous, one of the reasons Joe is under such scrutiny is due to Young's and his taking on county corruption. Investigations are a way to try and punish him for doing his job. They are all connected.

Lawn, yes the media mentioned the bonuses but did 5 create a blog to discuss it? The point is how the media goes after Joe but pays little attention to corruption or wasteful spending going on in government. Joe is doing a good job and may run for governor. Why is spending on law enforcement always the first to be questioned? These issues are all related.

Sheriff Joe is the best thing and the only thing left that is positive in Maricopa County. He is helping reduce the crime rate in all cities in the valley. Sixty-four arrests were made and more than 900 pounds of marijuana were seized in Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's latest crime sweep of the Valley before deputies hit the roads again on Friday.

Of the people arrested, 47 were determined by deputies to be in the country illegally, Arpaio said in a press conference Friday afternoon.

Twenty-seven of the suspected illegal immigrants were booked on allegations of violating Arizona's human smuggling law. The other 20 were not suspected of crimes other than being in the country illegally and were turned over to U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement, Arpaio said.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that his deputies were not arresting people without reason, and that the majority of the people arrested had committed felonies.

Deputies also found a suspected drophouse in Mesa early Friday morning, where authorities took into custody eight people suspected to be in the country illegally and confiscated about 700 pounds of marijuana, Arpaio said. Three of the people were booked into jail on suspicion of drug trafficking, and the other five were turned over to ICE.

That drug seizure brought the total in the operation to over 900 pounds of marijuana and 4½ pounds of methamphetamines, authorities said.

"Last night was successful, as far as I'm concerned," Arpaio said.

By 9 p.m. in the operation's second day, deputies had arrested 39 more people, 25 of whom were suspected of being in the country illegally. Sheriff's officials said a total of 94 people were arrested in the two-day sweep, including 64 suspected illegal immigrants.

The crime sweep, which started Thursday, is a two-day operation that has focused on human and drug smugglers.

Four hundred personnel have been involved in the operation, including helicopters to search for people who have fled the scene.

This is the sheriff's 14th operation, and he said a 15th will be coming soon.

Arpaio did not give details on the time or place of the next crime sweep, but he said it would be in Phoenix.

He acts holier than thou, thinks he's above the law, replies and directs in a snot nosed manner, and has no people skills to work with peers or the media. It's too bad he can't temper his attitude and treat people with a little compassion and common sense. Why doesn't the Phoenix Police Chief call a news conference and grandstand on TV for a while about how great he is? Because he is a real law enforcement man whose objective is to get the job done, not a sour old politician whose objective it is to be famous.

Lawn Order said that Liz should be Sheriff... that really was me- and was completely sarcastic. As though Liz or I was getting some actual enforcement from MCSO. Most LAEs just enforce the law, they don't need to make a big production every time they do anything. MCSO does. Why? Because they are incompetent and need to fool people into thinking they're "tough" (when we'd all prefer "effective").

That scowl Arpaio poses with for photos is supposed to make him look tough, it just makes him look angry. He's not tough- he's mean. He runs the biggest gang in the Valley. He even wants the Board of Supervisors to be afraid of him.

As for all of Simms garbage about federal investigations of Phoenix PD. maybe there will be one, but where's the pattern of abuse like we see with MCSO? And if there is, it won't make Joe Arpaio a better Sheriff.

Why does Hendershott make well over twice what Arpaio does? None of Joe's supporters have ever answered that.

I like Sheriff Joe Arpaio. He is a last of a dying breed of law enforcement leaders, especially here in Arizona. He lets his deputies be cops. Unlike those at Phx PD and DPS. Those leaders are spineless jelly fish, who try to limit and control what their officers do. To the leaders of Phx PD and DPS, get off your a** and work the streets for a bit. There are real dangerous people out there. In case your unaware, we have a huge border crisis going on in Mexico. Instead of limiting the powers and discretion of your fellow officers, why don't you get on their side for a change, instead of worrying about making more stringent policy changes. Thanks Sheriff Joe, for being a true leader and man, among boys.

Yeah, that waste of taxpayer money made me feel safer! And talk about publicity addict. He gets more face time on TV then most of the other politicians in this state! Why? because he likes to hear himself talk. And we pay for his security team because of the NUMEROUS people he's ticked off not to mention the MONEY it has cost us all because of the number of times he's been sued for his "way of doing things". Why don't you do a little digging into his Honduras trips and the Sheriff's Command Association. Why don't you look at the fact that he paid himself money from his last campaign funds to rent an office from himself. That's far worse than what Stapley is accused of. At least the campaign he's accused of diverting funds from was for a private committee, not a public office campaign fund.

I have a question for KPHO regarding the deputy that was charged with contempt for rifling through an attorneys PRIVATE files in court? Supposedly he went to jail but of course, nobody ever found out where or for how long. Did old Joe put the boy up in the Biltmore just to keep him out of site while he went after the judge that charged him with some bogus charges? Did Joe's little puppet just get put back on the job while the focus was on the judge? Whatever came out of the contempt charges and where is the lil deputy now? Here's how Arpaio answered your question. Note that in the last sentence, he has decided whether or not Stoddard is guilty, instead of allowing the courts to do so, the arrogant pig.

"Sheriff Joe Arpaio again referred to those ongoing political battles and praised Stoddard for his decision to report to custody - a decision that was entirely up to the 25-year-old detention officer.

"I hate to call our officer a political prisoner, but that's the way I feel because of the conduct of the judge in this matter," Arpaio said. "I have a feeling the judge may not like the sheriff."

Arpaio said Stoddard received special treatment afforded to any law-enforcement officer while he was in the Lower Buckeye Jail, including being held in closed custody, and that he was not forced to wear the sheriff's trademark pink underwear because Stoddard had not committed a crime."

The article did not specify a date when the appeal is to be heard.

Thousands of people are expected to pour into Washington for a Sunday rally demanding immigration reform, launching the first public battle over the issue since the announcement of a new bipartisan plan endorsed by President Obama.

While the nation will be focused largely on a more immediate debate -- an expected vote over health care reform -- the march on the National Mall will be setting the stage for a fight over another of the most contentious issues facing the country.

The organization Reform Immigration for America, which supports a path to citizenship for those in the United States illegally, says the changes it wants to see will help bring about "economic justice for all Americans."

In response, the Federation for American Immigration Reform -- which staunchly opposes amnesty -- called on Americans to contact their representatives and demand tougher borders and an end to illegal immigration. FAIR says it seeks "effective, sensible immigration policies that work for America's best interests."

"The American people deserve more than empty rhetoric and impractical calls for mass deportation," the two senators behind the new immigration plan wrote Friday in the Washington Post.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, lay out broad ideas for fixing a "badly broken" system.

"Our plan has four pillars: requiring biometric Social Security cards to ensure that illegal workers cannot get jobs; fulfilling and strengthening our commitments on border security and interior enforcement; creating a process for admitting temporary workers; and implementing a tough but fair path to legalization" for the 11 million immigrants in the United States illegally, the two lawmakers wrote.

The plan will "require an effective employment verification system that holds employers accountable for hiring illegal workers," the senators write, including a "tamper-proof ID system."

The plan also would create "a zero-tolerance policy for gang members, smugglers, terrorists and those who commit other felonies after coming here illegally."

"Ending illegal immigration, however, cannot be the sole objective of reform," they wrote. "Developing a rational legal immigration system is essential to ensuring America's future economic prosperity."

After meeting with Schumer and Graham -- both powerful figures within their parties -- earlier this week, President Obama issued a statement saying he was "pleased" to see their "promising, bipartisan framework which can and should be the basis for moving forward. It thoughtfully addresses the need to shore up our borders, and demands accountability from both workers who are here illegally and employers who game the system."

The "critical next step," Obama said, is turning the framework into legislation. He called on Congress "to act at the earliest possible opportunity."

The push forward on immigration also helped the president woo a key vote for health care reform.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Illinois, agreed to support the House health care bill after meeting with Obama and discussing immigration reform.

"After extensive discussions with the president, I believe we have a health care bill I can vote 'yes' for, and I believe we have a commitment to move forward on a comprehensive immigration reform package as soon as possible," Gutierrez said in a statement Thursday.

Thank you KPHO...for letting us tell everyone what we think...

and what we think is

We LOVE Sheriff Joe and how he protects us from those who would
do us harm.

Round 'em up, Lock 'em up....Send 'em Back ! hee-HA !

Way to go JOE ! And, luv that pink underwear idea.

So sad for Linda Rondstadt that she had to come here (out of her
own county) to protest against Joe....

One more indication that pop stars in this country have NO CLUE
as to what this country needs.

too bad !

It's too bad that so many people have blinders on and see only the illegals when they look at what is happening in Maricopa County. It's also too bad that they believe it when Joe Arpaio says he's tough on illegals. Phoenix PD and other metro area PD (Glendale, Tempe, etc)and DPS have arrested 10 times the number of illegals as MCSO has, and they don't send 400 officers at a time to do it. And if anyone knows of an incident where any department other than MCSO has gotten slapped with a civil rights violation lawsuit over activities surrounding the arrest of illegals, I'd appreciate it if you would post a link to the article.

I don't dislike Joe because of his stance on illegals per se. While I think these activities are more for show to get on TV, I don't have a problem with doing whatever can be done (within the law) to reduce the illegal population in Arizona.

I dislike Joe Arpaio because he is a corrupt, petty, egotistical, theatrical, media-hungry politician who wastes millions of dollars on personal vendettas in his attempt to gain dictatorship over Maricopa County - all politicians, all law enforcement, all judicial activities, all citizens and all non-citizens alike.

He is crazed with power and has lost touch with reality. He believes he is untouchable. Then there is this now-infamous video where he seems lost and confused and claims to have no direct knowledge of anything going on at MCSO. When confronted with the tough questions and no Lisa Allen PR script to work from, he seems like he didn't take his dementia medication and wandered away from his assisted care center.

Watch the video attached to this article and tell me THIS is a tough law enforcement man. No, it's a weak, corrupt politician that got caught red handed lying to the public and covering up for his department.

Why don't YOU go live in a country that doesn't believe in freedom of speech. You like politicians who harass others from positions of power just because they can? Well F*ck you and Arpaio!

And then there is the video-taped deposition of David Henderschott, the pompas blundering 2nd in command at MCSO who is bringing in 2 incomes granted him by Joe Arpaio, a full pension upon retirement from the department, and then a new hire as Chief Deputy for a huge salaray, hence one of less-negative nick names "Double Dippin Dave". According to his deposition, the entire country, starting with the President, is involved in a conspiracy to strip Joe of his power. They have no problem commencing an "investigation" into anyone who disagrees with Joe but when they come under "investigation", suddenly it's a huge conspiracy with "political motivation". Like their own investigations of everyone else in Maricopa County are not "politically motivated"!! That's a good one. Pathetic as it is, I had to laugh at that one.

In response to the first post on this board "How much did this cost?"

Do the math. 400 people x 2 days (assume 8 hours per day) equals 400 x 16 hrs x ?? (how much does a deputy make per hour? $30? $40?)

400 employees x 16 hours each over 2 days = 6400 hours pay.

6400 hours x $30 per hour (I'm assuming that's close)= $192,000.

That would be for officer pay only. I'm sure there are other expenses involved, such as supervisor pay, coordination of strategy, Lisa Allen's compensation for preparing Joe's script for his press conferences, fuel for vehicles and helicoptor, etc.

$192,000 so that Joe can walk out and give himself and his deputies a pat on the back and say "See all of dees illegal scumy mezkins we arrested?"

What a waste of money, again.

I think Joe has a Hitler persona and gets off on stroking his. It' a shame that someone with some smarts uses it like Bush did in certain circumstances. Too bad the tables weren't turned and you were the illegal, I'd love to see how wonderful of a person you are. Spending an untold and probably illegal amount of money catching illegals, you should be lucky to have a firing squad. But then again, I don't believe in the use of guns, I guess making you listen to heavy metal rock might do the trick and of course feed you only those things you detest maybe that would be punishment enough for your actions, but I can't judge you that's God's job. May he have pity on your soul.

Yeah- Joe makes a show (literally) of going after illegals. Those of you who think he's a great Sheriff because of this, please do some research! He's not very good (and very inefficient) at this aspect of law enforcement. He is accused of breaking the law which he is supposed to enforce, and has paid many millions of taxpayer dollars in damages (not to mention attorney fees) arising from abuses. He doesn't protect the citizens who rely on MCSO, with extremely long response times. How long would you want to wait for a police officer if someone were trying to forcibly enter your residence? If someone sexually abused one of your family members, would you not want that professionally and quickly investigated for closure and the protection of other potential victims. That's the exception and not the rule when MCSO is involved.

So when informed people read these posts about what a great Sheriff Joe Arpaio is because of his immigration crackdowns, we see a post by a likely sincere person who doesn't know the facts, but believes a politician's word. If you want links to make your search even easier, just ask.

We want excellent law enforcement, not a politician who markets himself as "tough", and exploits victims and violators. He fools some of the people all of the time, but those people can choose to educate themselves.

"Not sure what part of ILLEGAL people don't understand"? What part of we DO understand illegal, do you not understand? We want a Sheriff who understands what is illegal, and wants to be in law enforcement and no show business. Is that hard for Arpaio supporters to understand? Is that the best defense you can give him for all his malfeasance? Okay then.

Not sure what part of civil rights violations YOU don't understand pal! Yeah the illegals should be deported. Sure they don't belong here. But ignoring civil rights issues and abusing power in the United States shows that Apario and Thomas don't understand the laws nor do they respect the rights of Americans who are already here legally. Good bye and good riddance to the Tyrant Apraio and his henchmen!

Arpaio cheerleaders- here's a question: What part of "understand" do you not understand? When those who want complete and capable law enforcement without all of the lawsuits that other law enforcement agencies don't have say they don't support illegal immigration- why do you keep asking?

Is there no evidence to bolster Arpaio's position that his actions are justified when he investigates those who express concern about his job performance? Is there no way to show that he's not being a hypocrite when he uses taxpayer-funded resources to investigate and intimidate those who question him, then accuses those investigating his civil rights and abuse of power violations of political motivations?

Why doesn't anyone who says what a great job he's doing and how much money he's saving taxpayers ever back that up with facts and figures. Is it because he doesn't even know how much taxpayer money he spent on his latest publicity stunt? Propaganda is easy to spot. What his supporters post here almost universally meets the definition of propaganda. Don't insult our intelligence by expecting us to swallow it just because you, he, or someone else says so. The facts are available to those who aren't too lazy to find them. Of course, Arpaio prefers to attempt to destroy evidence of some of the facts. It's in the court record.

Like it or not, Sheriff Joe is the only one in this county, state, country, who has the balls to enforce this law. We certainly know that Obama "will not" do anything and I am not sure John McCain will either, how many more police officers and now a rancher, will have to die. before you get the message, allow those that come into this country legally, but not those that come in illegally.

And he MIGHT have spent more time helping YOU keep your homes and

BUT, that's just a hunch...as he's at least run something in his life,
UN-like the Muslim president you voted in...who took away the national
day of prayer..
and bailed out all the big banks, auto companies, etc.

Basically he bailed out all the big companies for the people who
have stocks in it (his supporters) and I ask you again..

what has he done for you?

At least, Sheriff Joe is working to keep Arizona from not
becoming a 'Wild Wild West' (again) or Mexico (where people get

How Dare you say something against this man who stayed in prison instead

How much does a sweep cost? How much does a war cost? This IS a war on our own turf. I'm grateful Sheriff Joe stands up for what he believes to be the right thing to do. Suspecting someone is an illegal is EXACTLY the same thing as suspecting someone is a criminal. Both situations need to be investigated.

This new law that is going to be passed is loooong overdue. What's the big deal about American Citizens with a hispanic heritage or any other heritage for that matter having to carry proof? When you drive a car, do you not have to carry "documentation" that you are a legal driver? It has nothing to do with profiling, it has to do with following the law. It also has absolutely nothing to do with a violation of civil rights. Civil rights are a privilege given to American Citizens. Nobody else in the United States has civil rights.

I know the sympathizers say "this person has been living here for 10, 20, 30 years. It's not fair to deport them" REALLY!!! If these people have been here for all those years and have made a better life for themselves, then why the hell didn't they file for citizenship? It's too hard? It takes too long? Wake up.... it's the legal thing to do.

They just want a better life. Hello.... so do the American Citizens living in poverty. We work for it, they steal it.

You have one person who's been committing a crime for untold years and another person who's been committing a crime for a few months. From a legal point of view, is there really a difference? NO a crime is a crime.

And for all of you out there born in the good old USA who have illegal parents.....You are American Citizens, You are AMERICAN not hispanic or whatever other nationality your parents are. If your parents told you your the same nationality as them, they lied. All those questionaires we all hate so much that ask "what nationality are you?" You Are American. Your heritage is the same as your parents NOT your nationality.

Sorry, that's one of my pet peeves. I hate American kids telling me I'm prejudice because they don't even know they're the same as me.
