Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office is in trouble for destroying evidence. We just have to wait to find out how much.

A federal judge has found grounds for sanctions after some sheriff's officials admitted to deleting their e-mails and shredding records of traffic stops made during crime sweeps.

A lawsuit accuses deputies of racially profiling Hispanics during the crime sweeps.

"I am extremely happy in the courts finding," Arpaio said in a statement. "My office will we be cooperating fully in this matter. At the end of the day I am confident in my deputies and the service they provide to the citizens of Maricopa County."

The judge said he'll wait until related issues are sorted out before punishing MCSO.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio had trouble recalling operations in his own office, according to a recent deposition.

The deposition centered on a federal civil rights lawsuit claiming that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio used racial profiling to round up illegal immigrants during sweeps across the Valley last year.

The sheriff sat and answered questions for almost seven hours from the plaintiff's attorney. Many times, the sheriff said, "I don't recall" and "I don't remember," even when asked about the details of key operations.

Arpaio also said he is not well-versed on the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and has not read the book he co-wrote in 2008, "Joe's Law: America's Toughest Sheriff."

"I am not sure, to the best of my knowledge," said Arpaio during the deposition. "I haven't reviewed the book recently. In fact, I haven't even read the book."

The Phoenix Business Journal is reporting that the U.S. Department of Justices has created a tip line as part of its investigation into allegations of racial profiling by Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his deputies:

The tip line — 877-613-2137 — is in both English and Spanish and asks those with information about the sheriff’s department to leave their names and numbers.

Justice Department spokesman Alejandro Miyar said the tip line is part of the federal civil rights inquiry and that the department also is using 800 numbers for other investigations.
